A former bartender and Sanders campaign organizer who won one of the biggest primary upsets of 2018, Ocasio-Cortez has become one of the most recognised and polarising voices of the American left. She pairs a combative public style with a talent for direct communication with voters.

About Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Personality

Ocasio-Cortez is direct, fast-moving and comfortable with confrontation, and she habitually speaks to supporters directly, including on social media. She has described a visit to the Standing Rock protest camp in 2016 as the moment she stopped believing only the wealthy and well-connected could run for office, and she entered her first race against a powerful incumbent with little money. Her pointed questioning of Michael Cohen at a 2019 Oversight hearing drew praise from commentators across the spectrum. Her decisions often weigh long-term movement goals against institutional rules, as when she stepped back from a leadership contest she judged was decided by seniority.

Under pressure

She has faced unusually personal hostility. When a Republican congressman insulted her on the Capitol steps in 2020, she answered with a floor speech arguing the episode reflected a wider tolerance of abusive language toward women. When another member posted an animated video depicting her killing, she called it part of a pattern that normalises violence. After losing a 2024 bid to lead Democrats on the Oversight Committee, she declined to try again, saying the caucus's seniority dynamics had not changed. In each case she answered publicly rather than letting the attack pass.

The arc

Born in the Bronx to a Bronx-born architect and a Puerto Rican-born mother, she grew up partly in Yorktown Heights, graduated from Boston University in 2011, and worked as a bartender and waitress after her father's death while helping her mother keep the family home. After organizing for Bernie Sanders in 2016, she defeated ten-term incumbent Joe Crowley in the 2018 primary. Reelected in 2020, 2022 and 2024, she joined Sanders on the 2025 Fighting Oligarchy Tour, won her June 2026 primary, and says she will decide on a Senate or presidential run after the midterms.

Legacy

Taking office at 29, Ocasio-Cortez is the youngest woman ever elected to Congress and, with Rashida Tlaib, one of the first two women from the Democratic Socialists of America to serve there. Her 2018 primary victory, won while being outspent roughly eighteen to one, became a template for insurgent progressive challengers. She helped bring the Green New Deal into national debate and is widely seen as a likely successor to Sanders as a leader of the party's left wing, whatever she decides about 2028.
