A former schoolteacher from Maine, King turned an early love of pulp horror into one of the largest bodies of popular fiction in American letters. He is disciplined, prolific and candid about his own failings.

About Stephen King

Personality

King is disciplined and prolific, keeping a daily writing routine and publishing at such a pace that he released five early novels under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, because publishers then believed readers would accept only one book a year from an author. He describes stories as relics to be dug up rather than plotted, often starting from a simple 'what if' and letting his characters take over. He is generous about the craft: On Writing (2000), part memoir and part manual, insists that anyone without time to read lacks the tools to write. He is also openly political, and briefly left X, formerly Twitter, before returning in 2025.

Under pressure

King has written openly about his dependence on alcohol and drugs in the 1980s. After his wife, Tabitha, led a family intervention following The Tommyknockers (1987), he went into treatment and has kept up his output ever since. In 1999 he was struck by a van and badly injured; On Writing describes how returning to his desk helped his recovery. When the National Book Foundation gave him its medal for distinguished contribution to American letters in 2003, the critic Harold Bloom denounced the choice as a dumbing down of culture. King went on writing in the popular forms that had made his name.

The arc

Born in Portland, Maine, King was two when his father left; his mother raised him and his older brother through years of moves before settling in Durham, Maine, when he was 11. He studied English at the University of Maine and taught at Hampden Academy while selling short stories to magazines. Tabitha King pulled the first pages of Carrie from the wastebasket and urged him to finish it; published in 1974, it launched his career. Five decades later he is still working, with Never Flinch in 2025, The End Times, a serialised novel with Benjamin Percy running into 2026, and Other Worlds Than These due in October 2026.

Legacy

King's books have sold in vast numbers and been adapted into dozens of films and series, with a new Carrie series from Mike Flanagan scheduled on Prime Video for October 2026. His honours include the National Book Foundation's Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters (2003), the Mystery Writers of America's Grand Master award (2007) and the National Medal of Arts (2014). He did much to make horror a mainstream genre read by millions, and through On Writing he has become one of the most widely read teachers of the craft of fiction.
