Abraham Joshua Heschel
Abraham Joshua Heschel was a Polish-born American rabbi, theologian, and philosopher. His writing explored Jewish faith and moral responsibility, and he joined the civil-rights movement, including the 1965 Selma march.
Scholar and rabbi
Heschel grew up in a Hasidic family in Warsaw and studied Jewish texts before pursuing philosophy and theology in Berlin. After fleeing Nazi persecution, he settled in the United States and taught Jewish ethics and mysticism at the Jewish Theological Seminary.
Faith and public action
Heschel wrote widely about biblical prophecy, prayer, and the moral demands of religious life. He developed friendships across religious traditions and became an outspoken civil-rights advocate. His participation in the Selma march with Martin Luther King Jr. made that partnership a lasting image of faith and justice.
