Ja'Marr Chase
Chase is a physical, openly confident receiver whose partnership with quarterback Joe Burrow, begun at LSU, has driven Cincinnati's offense. He has been among the NFL's most productive receivers since his first season.
Personality
Chase plays and speaks with open confidence. After a quiet start to the 2023 season he declared in a postgame interview that he was always open, then set a Bengals record with 15 catches the following week; he later turned 'Always Open' into a merchandise slogan. He is willing to take firm positions off the field too: he sat out his final college season in 2020 to prepare for the NFL, and in 2024 staged a training-camp 'hold-in' while seeking a new contract, then played when no deal was reached. His bond with Joe Burrow, his college quarterback, runs through his whole career.
Under pressure
Chase has handled setbacks without losing production. After a shaky preseason as a rookie, he set the NFL rookie record for receiving yards in a game and the rookie postseason yardage record on the way to Super Bowl LVI, which Cincinnati lost 23-20. In 2022 an injury cost him four games, yet he still led the team in catches and yards. Contract uncertainty in 2024 was followed by his best season. In November 2025 an on-field altercation with Pittsburgh's Jalen Ramsey led to a one-game NFL suspension; his appeal was denied and he later apologised.
The arc
A native of Harvey, across the Mississippi from New Orleans, Chase starred at Archbishop Rummel High School in Metairie and went to LSU, where in 2019 he won the Biletnikoff Award and the national championship alongside Burrow. After opting out of 2020, he was drafted fifth overall by Cincinnati in 2021, won Offensive Rookie of the Year and started in the Super Bowl. He made five straight Pro Bowls, won the 2024 triple crown and signed a four-year, $161 million extension in March 2025. As of September 2026 he is in his sixth season with the Bengals, wearing number 1.
Legacy
Chase is one of only five players of the Super Bowl era to win the receiving triple crown, with 127 catches, 1,708 yards and 17 touchdowns in 2024, and his 266-yard game in 2021 remains the NFL rookie record. He was the first player with multiple games of at least 250 receiving yards and two touchdowns, and he holds several Bengals receiving records. His 2025 extension made him, at the time, the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history, a measure of how central elite receivers have become to modern offenses.
