Andrew Carnegie
Scottish-American industrialist and philanthropist who built Carnegie Steel and funded public libraries, universities, and cultural institutions.
Steel and industry
Andrew Carnegie immigrated from Scotland as a child and rose from factory work and telegraphy to build a large American steel enterprise. His companies expanded through railroads, bridges and steel production, and the 1901 sale of Carnegie Steel helped form U.S. Steel.
Philanthropic legacy
Carnegie devoted much of his fortune to libraries, education, cultural institutions and peace initiatives. The Carnegie Council’s institutional biography confirms his birth on 25 November 1835 in Dunfermline; conflicting historical time claims remain excluded from the chart record.
