Thomas Mellon
Irish-American banker, lawyer and judge who founded the financial business that became Mellon Bank and established a Pittsburgh banking family.
Mellon banking business
Thomas Mellon emigrated from County Tyrone to western Pennsylvania as a child, studied law and entered public service before moving into banking. He founded T. Mellon & Sons in Pittsburgh in 1869; the family institution later became Mellon National Bank and grew into one of the region’s major financial firms.
Banking family and legacy
Mellon’s sons Andrew and Richard expanded the family’s business and civic influence. His memoir and the Dictionary of Irish Biography identify Camp Hill Cottage in County Tyrone as his birthplace on 3 February 1813. No clock time was found, so this record intentionally remains unknown-time.
