About Viola Davis

Personality

Davis is direct and purposeful. She speaks openly about growing up in severe poverty in Central Falls, Rhode Island, and about the narrow range of roles offered to Black actresses, and she has acted on that view: with her husband, Julius Tennon, she founded JuVee Productions to develop the stories she wants told. She is willing to revisit her own choices in public, later saying she regretted The Help because the maids' own voices were not the ones heard. Critics and directors describe performances that are deeply felt yet firmly grounded.

Under pressure

Davis built her career slowly, spending years in theatre and small screen parts before one short scene in Doubt (2008) brought an Oscar nomination. She tends to answer criticism head-on. When her portrayal of Michelle Obama in The First Lady (2022) drew backlash on social media, she called the reaction hurtful but said a leader has to make bold choices. Earlier she defended playing a serial killer on Law & Order despite negative reactions from some viewers, saying she had to follow her own judgement. Setbacks have tended to sharpen her public voice rather than quiet it.

The arc

Born on her grandmother's farm in St. Matthews, South Carolina, Davis was raised in Central Falls, Rhode Island, studied theatre at Rhode Island College and trained at Juilliard. She won Tony Awards for August Wilson's King Hedley II (2001) and Fences (2010), then broke through on screen with Doubt and The Help. How to Get Away with Murder (2014-2020) made her the first Black actress to win the Emmy for lead actress in a drama, and the film of Fences brought her the Oscar in 2017. Recent work includes The Woman King, the 2025 action thriller G20 and the 2026 novel Judge Stone.

Legacy

Davis was the first Black performer to achieve the Triple Crown of Acting, winning a competitive Oscar, Emmy and Tony, and she completed an EGOT in 2023 when the audiobook of her memoir Finding Me won a Grammy. With her fourth Academy Award nomination, for Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, she became the most Oscar-nominated Black actress. The New York Times ranked her ninth among the greatest actors of the 21st century, and her speeches about opportunity for women of colour have made her an influential voice well beyond her films.
