Sanders is a politician of unusual consistency who spent decades on the fringe of American politics before his message about economic inequality moved into the mainstream. His 2016 and 2020 presidential campaigns turned him into a leading figure of the progressive movement.

About Bernie Sanders

Personality

Sanders is plain-spoken and strikingly consistent: since his third-party campaigns of the 1970s he has argued essentially the same case about inequality and the political power of great wealth. As a student he called the classroom boring and irrelevant and put his energy into civil-rights organizing instead. A fellow activist from those years remembered him as not especially charismatic but good at working with people he disagreed with. That mix of fixed conviction and practical coalition-building runs through his career: he stays independent of the Democratic Party while caucusing and bargaining with it.

Under pressure

He lost his first school election and then a string of third-party races for governor and senator in Vermont in the 1970s before winning the Burlington mayoralty in 1981 by a recounted margin of ten votes. In 2016, leaked party emails showed national Democratic officials had favoured Hillary Clinton, yet he endorsed her and held 39 rallies on her behalf. In 2020 he went from front-runner to suspending his campaign within weeks, then endorsed Joe Biden and worked closely with him. Setbacks have tended to make him regroup rather than retreat.

The arc

Born in Brooklyn to a Polish-Jewish immigrant father, Sanders studied at Brooklyn College and the University of Chicago and moved to Vermont in 1968. After four terms as mayor of Burlington he won Vermont's single House seat in 1990, co-founded the Congressional Progressive Caucus, and moved to the Senate in 2006. His presidential runs in 2016 and 2020 made him a national figure. Since 2025 he has toured the country with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez against what he calls oligarchy, and in September 2026 he introduced legislation to pause advanced artificial-intelligence development.

Legacy

Sanders is widely credited with pulling the Democratic Party to the left after 2016, putting ideas such as single-payer health care, tuition-free public college and paid parental leave at the centre of mainstream debate. His campaigns showed that a national race could be funded largely by small donors while refusing corporate money and super PACs. As the longest-serving independent in congressional history, he has also demonstrated that a politician outside both major parties can hold real influence in Washington for decades.
