William S. Burroughs
American novelist and visual artist, a leading Beat Generation writer best known for Naked Lunch and his experimental cut-up technique.
The Beat Generation
Burroughs became a central figure in postwar American literature and the Beat movement. His novel Naked Lunch, published in 1959, challenged conventional narrative and was the subject of a landmark obscenity trial that helped widen protections for literary expression.
Experimental writing
Across fiction, essays, recordings and visual art, Burroughs developed the cut-up technique and explored censorship, power, addiction and language. The University of Kansas archive describes him as an influential writer and countercultural figure; he died in Lawrence in 1997.
