Dietrich Bonhoeffer
Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a German Lutheran pastor and theologian who opposed the Nazi regime. His writing on Christian ethics and life under dictatorship remains influential, and he was executed at Flossenbürg concentration camp in 1945.
Theologian and pastor
Bonhoeffer studied theology in Berlin and New York and served congregations in Germany, Spain, and England. He helped lead the Confessing Church's resistance to Nazi control of Protestant institutions and ran an underground seminary for pastors.
Resistance and legacy
Bonhoeffer joined the German resistance and was arrested in 1943. His letters and reflections from prison, published after his death, became influential works of modern Christian thought. He was executed in April 1945, shortly before the end of the war.
