Pope John Paul I
Albino Luciani became Pope John Paul I in August 1978. His 33-day papacy was brief, but his warmth, simple public language, and pastoral outlook made him a memorable figure.
Pastoral career
Luciani was raised in a poor family in the Dolomites and studied at seminaries in Feltre and Belluno. After ordination he taught theology, served as a parish priest and diocesan leader, and later became bishop of Vittorio Veneto and patriarch of Venice.
A brief papacy
Elected pope in August 1978, Luciani chose the name John Paul I and emphasized humility and pastoral closeness. He died unexpectedly after 33 days in office. His short tenure and later beatification have kept public interest in his life and leadership alive.
