About Thich Nhat Hanh

Personality

Thich Nhat Hanh taught through books, talks, retreats and simple daily practices. His community’s programs included sitting, walking and eating meditation, bringing Buddhist training into ordinary activities. He was also a poet and calligrapher. His public teaching emphasized deep listening and nonviolent responses to conflict. These methods formed part of his practical work with students and communities, rather than a claim about an innate or hidden personality.

Under pressure

During the Vietnam War, Thich Nhat Hanh helped organize social service and relief work while continuing Buddhist teaching. He traveled abroad in 1966 to call for peace and was denied the ability to return home, beginning a long exile. Martin Luther King Jr. nominated him for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1967. He continued advocating an end to the war while building communities outside Vietnam, combining religious practice with public peace work.

The arc

Born in Hue in 1926, Thich Nhat Hanh entered Tu Hieu Temple as a novice at sixteen. He studied and taught in the United States in the early 1960s before returning to Vietnam. He established the Order of Interbeing in 1966 and later settled in France. Plum Village began in 1982. He returned to live at his root temple in Vietnam in 2018 and died there on January 22, 2022.

Legacy

Thich Nhat Hanh’s legacy includes the Plum Village tradition, the Order of Interbeing and an extensive body of writing. His teaching linked contemplation with work for peace and social welfare, an approach associated with engaged Buddhism. Monastic and lay communities continue his retreats and daily practices. His influence therefore rests not only in books or speeches, but also in institutions and groups that carry those forms of Buddhist practice forward.
