About Shaun White

Personality

White has combined competitive drive with an entrepreneurial streak. As a nine-year-old at an Encinitas skate park he caught the attention of Tony Hawk, who mentored him, and he turned professional in skateboarding at 16 while already a leading snowboarder, later winning X Games medals in both sports. He built a large sponsorship portfolio and his own video game series, launched the lifestyle brand Whitespace in 2022, and then set up The Snow League, saying he wanted riders to be able to earn a good living from a season on tour, as athletes do in other professional sports. He also plays guitar in the band Bad Things.

Under pressure

White repeatedly delivered in decisive moments. In October 2017, training in New Zealand for the Olympics, he crashed into the edge of a superpipe and needed 62 stitches to his face. He still qualified for the 2018 Games, and in the final, trailing Japan's Ayumu Hirano by a point going into his last run, he landed back-to-back 1440s to win gold. That came four years after a disappointing fourth place at Sochi 2014, where he was the most talked-about athlete of the Games on Facebook. At Beijing 2022 he again finished fourth and chose that moment to end his competitive career.

The arc

Born in San Diego, White switched from skiing to snowboarding at six, following his older brother, and had his first sponsor at seven. He won Olympic halfpipe gold at Turin 2006 and defended it at Vancouver 2010, while collecting a record haul of Winter X Games titles. After fourth place in 2014, he won again at Pyeongchang 2018; that gold was the 100th for the United States at the Winter Olympics. He retired after Beijing 2022, taking a standing ovation on his final run. The Snow League held its first event in Aspen in March 2025 and began a second season in 2026.

Legacy

White holds the records for most X Games gold medals and most Olympic gold medals by a snowboarder, and in 2012 he became the first rider to score a perfect 100 in the Winter X Games SuperPipe. His three Olympic halfpipe titles across twelve years show unusual staying power in a sport driven by young riders and fast-changing tricks. He has also won ten ESPY Awards. Through The Snow League, which has a broadcast partnership with NBC, he is trying to give halfpipe snowboarding and freeskiing a professional structure closer to that of mainstream sports.
