Kendrick Lamar
Kendrick Lamar is an American rapper and songwriter who won the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Music. His album GNX won Best Rap Album at the 2026 Grammys.
Personality
Lamar's public work is built around narrative rap, changes of voice and close attention to language. His albums bring personal storytelling into contact with the history and daily life of Compton and wider Black American experience. The music also draws on jazz, funk and other traditions. These are features of the published recordings, which give listeners different perspectives without establishing what he is like outside performance.
Under pressure
Lamar's rise brought his work from locally circulated releases to major albums and large public stages. Rather than keeping every record in one format, he has used connected stories and shifts in musical approach. To Pimp a Butterfly expanded his instrumental palette, while later projects continued to change the presentation. His 2025 Super Bowl halftime performance placed that established body of work before a particularly broad audience.
The arc
Lamar was born in Compton, California, and began releasing music under the name K.Dot as a teenager. Section.80 preceded his major-label breakthrough with Good Kid, M.A.A.D City in 2012. To Pimp a Butterfly and DAMN. followed, with DAMN. receiving the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Music. His subsequent albums included Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers and GNX. He remains an active rapper and songwriter.
Legacy
Lamar's Pulitzer recognition widened the institutional recognition of hip-hop, while his albums established a substantial record of narrative and musical experimentation. The Recording Academy lists GNX as the 2026 Best Rap Album winner and Luther with SZA as Record of the Year. Those current awards add to a career already recognized by major cultural institutions. His influence rests on the recordings and performances as well as those honors.
