About Victor Wembanyama

Personality

Wembanyama comes across as curious, articulate and self-directed. He taught himself English largely through online videos and television, earned his baccalauréat with honours while already playing professionally, and lists science fiction, art, literature and chess among his interests; he has played chess with fans in New York's Washington Square Park and organised a chess-and-basketball event in Le Chesnay. As a young teenager he turned down Barcelona, saying its coaches were not willing to challenge him. In 2025 he spent ten days training in kung fu at the Shaolin Temple in China, while saying he is not a Buddhist himself.

Under pressure

Expectations were extreme from his mid-teens: before the 2023 draft the NBA commissioner said the league would watch closely for teams losing on purpose to get him. His second NBA season ended early in February 2025, when the Spurs shut him down for the rest of the year, and he came back to win Defensive Player of the Year in 2025-26. His first playoffs mixed records with setbacks, including the first ejection of his career, for a flagrant foul against Minnesota, and a five-game Finals loss to the New York Knicks in which he still averaged 26 points and 3.6 blocks.

The arc

Born in Le Chesnay near Versailles into a family of athletes, Wembanyama learned the game from his mother, a basketball coach. He debuted professionally with Nanterre 92 at 15, won a French title with ASVEL, and in 2022-23 became the youngest Pro A MVP with Metropolitans 92. San Antonio drafted him first overall in 2023 and he was the unanimous Rookie of the Year. He won Olympic silver with France in 2024 and became an All-Star in 2025. In 2025-26 he won Defensive Player of the Year, made the All-NBA First Team, finished third in MVP voting and was Western Conference Finals MVP.

Legacy

Wembanyama is changing ideas of what a very tall player can do, pairing elite rim protection with ball-handling and three-point shooting. He was the first rookie named to the All-Defensive First Team and the first unanimous Defensive Player of the Year, and in May 2026 he set the NBA record for blocks in a playoff game with 12. His 78 blocks in the 2026 playoffs were the third-highest total for a single postseason. For the Spurs, a franchise built on Tim Duncan and David Robinson, he restored contention quickly, reaching the Finals in his first postseason.
