Sidney Poitier was a Bahamian-American actor, director, and diplomat who broke racial barriers in Hollywood. In 1964, he became the first Black man to win an Academy Award for Best Actor (for "Lilies of the Field"). Known for films like "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" and "In the Heat of the Night", Poitier’s dignified roles and presence paved the way for generations of actors of color.
