Gate 36 is the emotional gate of crisis: it meets the unknown and feels it deeply. It is here to develop emotional intelligence through experience—often through intense beginnings, messy middles, and eventual integration. The highs and lows aren't punishment; they are the curriculum.

With Gate 35 it forms the Channel of Transitoriness, where new experiences can quickly become overwhelming if entered too fast. In alignment, Gate 36 becomes compassionate, seasoned, and steady in storms; in distortion, it can catastrophize or chase intensity for its own sake.
